'THE GLIMPS OF WAR REFLECTED IN THE BRAVERY AND SERVICE OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND DIED FOR OTHERS'

RECIPIENTS OF THE BELGIAN IRON CROSS


 

IN THE NIGHT OF THE 25TH OF AUGUST 1830 CITIZENS OF BRUSSEL, STORMED THE STREETS AFTER THE PLAYLET, "DE STOMME VAN PORTICI", WAS PLAYED IN THE 'MUNTSCHOUWBURG'. IN THE FOLLOWING DAYS BELGIANS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ESSEMBLED VOLUNTEER CORPS AND MOVED TO BRUSSELS. THE ENGAGMENT BEGAN ON THE 20TH OF SEPTEMBER WHEN THE LIEGOIS VOLUNTEERS CONQUERED THE 'LA CHARTREUSE' FORTRESS. THREE DAYS LATER THE SKIRMISHS OF BRUSSELS BEGAN AND ENDED AFTER FOUR DAYS, WHEN THE DUTCH ARMY RETREATED. THE FOLLOW MONTH BATTLES AT LIER, BERCHEM, ANTWERP WALBURGE, BROKE OUT. THEY ALL RESULTED IN THE RECOGNITION OF THE BELGIAN INDEPENDENCE ON THE 20TH OF DECEMBER 1830.

,until the Dutch army fled the city in the night of the 26th and 27th of september 1830
